Abstract:
Jie Zhang, PhD, is an associate professor in the Department of Education and Human Development at The College at Brockport. Dr. Zhang teaches special education courses and supervises student teaching. Her research interests are: to explore the cultural and linguistic factors in the services for children with diverse backgrounds/abilities and their families; and to investigate the efficacy of different instructional methods on teaching and learning. It is her passion to work with students with diverse backgrounds, their teachers, and parents/families to enhance the quality of their lives. ; The purposes of this presentation are to (1) introduce a service learning project in two special education courses in the past two years, sponsored by the Institute for Engaged Learning; and (2) to explore ways to help college students make closer connections between course work and community service for people with special needs and their families.
