Abstract:
Eisenberg (2021, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung) argues that forms like 'Lehrer*in' unambiguously encode the feminine form of the word (Lehrerin) since -in is a suffixial head that determines the grammatical properties of the stem it attaches to. This experiment tests the hypothesis that native speakers of German interpret such forms differently, as a kind of asyndetic coordination. The idea is that they are shortforms for 'Lehrer/Lehrerinnen'. The hypothesis is furthermore that such syntactic alternatives, once introduced by coordination, can 'project' to derive more complex alternative utterances, e.g. (Die Lehrer/Die Lehrerinnen) up to the sentence level, be it by ellipsis or some other mechanism ...
