Would a Bulbasaur by any other name be as iconic? Analyzing motivations in Pokémon name localization
Miller, Kenna. - : The Ohio State University, 2022
Abstract: As Pokémon's fanbase expands globally, its fantastical animals undergo "localization" — "translating" a creature's name and characteristics to a new locale's language and culture. For Pokémon names (pokemonikers), this process requires adopting or adapting, i.e. accepting the original name wholesale or altering it along various dimensions. A pokemoniker is generally not an arbitrary label, but motivated so that it expresses a creature's characteristics. The degree of non-arbitrariness (motivation and iconicity) in pokemonikers is scalar, surfacing through the name's structure, the meaning of its parts, and any associations evoked by certain sounds (sound symbolism). This paper identifies and explains these localization strategies for Pokémon names, analyzing the distribution of each across various languages. I compare the ways that the first 50 Pokémon (originally Japanese) are localized in six world languages—English, French, German, Korean, Mandarin, and Spanish—and conduct cross-linguistic investigations into the processes of localization. I identify the major strategies in pokemoniker localization on a spectrum ranging from adoption to adaptation, further classifying these strategies according to processes of language change rooted in historical linguistics (analogy, folk etymology, etc.). Using the semantic taxonomy of Buck 1949 (Dictionary of Selected Synonyms in The Principal Indo-European Languages), I catalog the different semantic 'classes' of the constituents making up each pokemoniker, identifying any patterns unique to a localization. Additionally, I postulate the reasons behind the choices made, considering marketing factors and cultural differences. Examining motivation in Pokémon naming practices can inform the rationale behind naming items in general— the human need to attach motivation to all things carries over into the Pokemon world (Baldinger, 1980). To the extent that these names make sense, it is fair to ask: Would a rose, or a Bulbasaur, by any other name smell as sweet? ; The Ohio State University Undergraduate Research Scholarship Program ; Denman Undergraduate Research Forum ; No embargo ; Academic Major: Linguistics
