Abstract:
; This thesis aims to analyze the acquisition of American Sign Language (ASL) as a second language (L2) according to the perception of monolingual and plurilingual university learners. Does the perception of plurilinguals learning ASL as a L2 differ from that of monolinguals in the acquisition of a visuo-spatial language? The first three chapters lay the theoretical foundations. After having shown that ASL constitutes a true natural language (Chapter 1), we define plurilingualism and plurilingual competence (Chapter 2). To complete the theoretical anchoring, we clarify what perception is and how it can be influenced by certain factors (Chapter 3). The last three chapters cover the empirical part of the research. In Chapter 4, we explain the procedure adopted (methodological tool, elaboration of the questionnaire, sampling and data collection) and explain how the 138 questionnaires collected from university learners are analyzed. Tables and figures, followed by an explicit description, present the results and allow to examine the statistical relevance according to the “Percentage of maximum deviation” (“Pourcentage de l’écart maximum” or PEM), generated by the Modalisa analysis software (Chapter 5). In the last chapter, we discuss the results. According to the PEM, plurilinguals are not significantly different from monolinguals regarding the acquisition of linguistic elements, comparisons between ASL and audio-oral languages, and use of cognitive and metacognitive strategies. For monolinguals, as for plurilinguals, the use of these strategies is inversely proportional to the level of ASL. On the other hand, we can observe that plurilinguals, unlike monolinguals, claim higher scores at the beginner level, which indicates that the differences in perception are not related solely to their language repertoire but would depend on broader concepts. Other significant results show a parallelism between certain stages of acquisition of a first language (L1) with those of a L2, regardless of their modality. After examining the theoretical scope of the results, we draw a series of pedagogical implications. In the conclusion, after making a general assessment, we propose many lines of study that our research opens in transdisciplinary fields of investigation.
