Abstract:
Die Arbeit behandelt die Frage, ob im Deutschen und/oder im Englischen ein Artikel (definit wie indefinit) optional sein kann, wenn das entsprechende Nomen abstrakte Bedeutung trägt. Abstraktheit wird dabei verstanden als Abstraktheit der Extension (nicht Intension), Optionalität als die Situation, in der die Varianten mit und ohne Artikel gleichermaßen grammatisch sind und keinen semantischen oder pragmatischen Unterschied zeigen. Ausgehend von Fällen scheinbarer Artikeloptionalität wie in (1), (2) und (3) (1) (Die) Freiheit ist unser höchstes Gut. / (*The) love is a force from above. (2) Sie hatte (ein) Interesse an Autos. / What we've got here is (a) failure to communicate. (3) Merkel denkt über den/einen Rücktritt nach. / An/The adoption of the child would be. wird für die formalen Oppositionen definit–artikellos (1), indefinit–artikellos (2), sowie definit–indefinit (3) untersucht, in welchen Kontexten bzw. unter welchen Bedingungen jeweils beide Varianten möglich sind, und wodurch sie sich ggf. in ihrer Semantik und/oder Pragmatik unterscheiden. Dabei werden auch Gemeinsamkeiten und Unterschiede zwischen dem Deutschen und dem Englischen thematisiert. Zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfrage werden zunächst die bisherigen relevanten Forschungsergebnisse referiert, was schon zu einer deutlichen Eingrenzung der Bedingungen bzw. Kontexte für scheinbare Optionalität führt. So tritt z.B. das Phänomen in (1) hauptsächlich in generischen Verwendungen auf. Für Fälle wie in (2) und (3) werden pragmatische Faktoren wie der Wunsch nach Unterdrückung einer Präsupposition als Hauptursachen für die wahrgenommene Optionalität identifiziert. Anschließend werden der Begriffskomplex "abstrakt–konkret" bzw. "Abstraktum–Konkretum" und der damit zusammenhängende Begriff der "Abstraktion" ausgehend von ihrer historischen Entwicklung und mit Blick auf verschiedene Verständnisse in der philosophischen Tradition unter die Lupe genommen und für die Zwecke der Arbeit entsprechend spezifiziert. Eine wichtige Rolle kommt hierbei dem relativ jungen Konzept der Trope zu, die gewissermaßen eine mittlere Position zwischen abstrakten und konkreten Entitäten einnimmt. Einen zentralen Aspekt der Arbeit bildet der Versuch einer Beschreibung der Semantik von Abstrakta, die besonderes Augenmerk auf die Funktion der Vergegenständlichung von Propositionen legt. Gemäß der Standardannahme, dass in beiden Sprachen nur Eigennamen und Massennomina artikellos im Singular verwendet werden können, wird die Analyse von Abstrakta als Massennomina diskutiert und schließlich (zumindest für einige Unterklassen) übernommen. Eine Analyse von artikellos verwendeten Abstrakta als Eigennamen wird – trotz einiger, vor allem im Englischen sichtbarer Evidenz dafür – verworfen. Der Bereich der Generizität ist ein weiterer wichtiger Untersuchungsgegenstand, da er den Rahmen für den am schwierigsten zu beurteilenden Phänomenbereich bildet: die Beispiele in (1). Unter dem Vorbehalt, dass es selbst für herkömmliche, konkrete Massennomina im Deutschen empirisch noch ungeklärt ist, ob sie (anders als im Englischen) eine echt generische Interpretation erhalten können, wenn sie mit definitem Artikel markiert sind, wird nach Abwägung zahlreicher Beispiele und Kontexte der Schluss gezogen, dass dies nicht der Fall ist und folglich auch für die Opposition definit–artikellos keine echte Optionalität existiert. Es werden zehn Faktoren zusammengetragen, die die Akzeptabilität des definiten Artikels in (scheinbar) generisch zu interpretierenden Sätzen beeinflussen. Aus verschiedenen Beobachtungen wird weiterhin ein Vorschlag zur engeren konzeptuellen Verzahnung von Abstraktion/Abstraktheit und Generizität entwickelt. Außerdem wird im Laufe der Arbeit die These aufgestellt, dass die besondere kognitive Natur von Abstrakta dazu führt, dass wahrheitsfunktionale Unterschiede zwischen den Lesarten mit und ohne Artikel häufig so subtil sind, dass sie kommunikativ leicht ignoriert werden können, was nicht nur synchronisch betrachtet eine Ursache für scheinbare Optionalität ist, sondern auch eine gewisse Relevanz für den Sprachwandel zu haben scheint. ; This dissertation seeks to answer the question whether, in German and/or English, (definite or indefinite) articles can be realised optionally when the noun has abstract denotation. Abstractness is understood as abstractness of the noun's extension, optionality is reserved for situations in which the variants with and without article are not only equally grammatical but also equivalent in terms of their semantics and pragmatics. Starting from apparent cases of optionality like the ones in (1), (2) and (3) (1) (Die) Freiheit ist unser höchstes Gut. / (*The) love is a force from above. (2) Sie hatte (ein) Interesse an Autos. / What we've got here is (a) failure to communicate. (3) Merkel denkt über den/einen Rücktritt nach. / The/An adoption of the child would be. the three formal oppositions definite–bare (1), indefinite–bare (2), and definite–indefinite (3) are examined with respect to the conditions under which the two variants seem interchangeable, and in what respect they might differ semantically and/or pragmatically after all. The investigation will also consider commonalities and differences between German and English. In order to answer the research question, the relevant previous research is reviewed, which already restricts the conditions and contexts of the observed optionality – for instance, the cases illustrated in (1) occur almost exclusively in generic use. For the cases in (2) and (3), pragmatic factors like the intention to suppress presuppositions are identified as the main reasons for the perceived optionality. Next, the terms "abstract–concrete (noun)" and "abstraction" are discussed against their historical background and differing philosophical conceptions. The terms are then specified in relation to the aims of the dissertation, granting an important role to the rather recent concept of the trope, an entity in between the abstract and the concrete. One of the centrepieces of this work is the attempt to describe the semantics of abstract nouns, focussing particularly on the function of objectifying (or 'reifying') propositions. According to the standard assumption for both German and English that only proper names and mass nouns can appear bare in the singular, the analysis of abstract nouns as mass nouns is discussed and finally adopted – at least for some sub-classes –, while the analysis of bare abstract nouns as proper names is discarded despite some (mostly English) evidence in its favour. The phenomenon of genericity is another central object of scrutiny, for it lays the ground for the optionality observed in cases like (1), which proves to be the most intricate of the three scenarios. Despite an empirical gap to the effect that for German it is yet unclear whether definite (concrete) mass nouns and plurals can (unlike in English) have truly generic interpretations, the conclusion is that there is no real optionality of article realisation in any case. Instead, the dissertation compiles a list of ten factors that influence the acceptability of the definite article with mass and plural nouns in (apparently) generic use. A series of other observations leads to a proposal to establish a tighter conceptual link between abstraction/abstractness and genericity. Finally, the fact that abstract nouns are special in terms of cognition and therefore prone to situations where the truth conditions of the bare and the articled variant are virtually indistinguishable is claimed to not only be responsible for the perceived optionality in synchrony but to also show some effects in language change.
