Une socialisation langagière paradoxale à l’école maternelle
In: Langage et société, N 156, 2, 2016-05-09, pp.57-76 (2016)
; In French nursery schools, the language socialization children undergo is both dual, and mismatched. They are socialized in an academic and legitimate language, belonging to written culture: an explicit, decontextualized verbal language, which constitutes their first knowledge of materialized writing. At the same time, a peer language develops, which belongs to oral culture and contributes to the structuration of a child-centered social order. Lacking institutional recognition as a language, dominated yet resistant, it hampers both school order and school language. Contemporary forms of control over child activity, which assume early autonomy, render possible the co-existence of these two languages at the heart of school activities. With regard to acculturation into schooling, this phenomenon produces social differentiation, to the detriment of children less endowed in school resources.
