Performance Characteristics of Planning Actors

Abstract:
Planning is a field of interest in many scientific disciplines. These scientific areas cover a multitude of planning approaches that at first sight do not have much in common: psycho-physiological analyses, organizational science, linguistics, cognitive science, operations research, and spatial science, to name just a view. The differences in ontologies and methods used make it difficult to make statements that transcend the mono-disciplinary perspectives. Still, no matter the research field, planning always concerns anticipating on the future and determining courses of action. As a consequence, there must also be similarities between the various approaches that deal with planning. This paper proposes a number of characteristics that can be used to analyze the differences and similarities in performance of different kinds of planning actors. ; Presented at the Performance Metrics for Intelligent Systems Workshop (PerMIS-02) held in Gaithersburg, Maryland on 13-15 August 2002. Published in the Proceedings of the Performance Metrics for Intelligent Systems Workshop, August 2002.
