Abstract:
International audience ; Determining the morphosyntactic status of verbal constructions is an enduring issue in African linguistics. In Wolof, most verbal constructions are split predicate constructions involving a predicative marker, which encodes the greater part of the grammatical content, and a verb, which contributes to the lexical content. The aim of the current paper is to investigate the morphosyntactic status of these complex predicates. Based on several kinds of criteria (phonology, morphology and semantics), I show that the predicative markers must be analysed as phonologically dependent words (clitics). Thus, Wolof complex predicates clearly display syntactic construction features and cannot therefore be considered as morphological units. ; La détermination du statut morphosyntaxique des constructions verbales est un problème récurrent en linguistique africaine. En wolof, la majorité des constructions verbales sont des constructions à prédicats scindés constitués d'un marqueur prédicatif qui porte la majorité de l'information grammaticale et d'un verbe qui porte toute l'information lexicale. L'objectif de cet article est d'étudier le statut morphosyntaxique de ces prédicats complexes. En nous basant sur différents types de critères (phonologiques, morphologiques et sémantiques), nous montrons que les marqueurs prédicatifs doivent être analysés comme des mots phonologiquement dépendants (clitiques). Ainsi, les prédicats complexes du wolof présentent clairement des caractéristiques de séquences syntaxiques et ne peuvent donc pas être considérés comme des unités relevant de la morphologie.
