Abstract:
This project is a means of understanding artist Paul Chan's multi-media practice as a response to war, language, and politics. In the project, I focus on Chan's multiple videos, installations, sculptures, drawings, paintings, and publishing that meditate on the George W. Bush administration and the wars in the middle east. Frequent themes that persist are the relationships between sex and violence, activism and aesthetics and truth and fiction. Throughout, I argue that Chan responds to the rhetoric of American politics through an artistic empathy and social commitment.
