Translating identities : new words for old aspirations. The Catalan case
Ponomarenko, Lesia
;
Santamaria, Laura
. - 2018
Abstract:
Political and social processes often come along with creation of new lexical items (words or expressions) and addition of new meanings to the existing words in the context of such events. In this presentation we deal with such lexical units created in Spanish and Catalan languages to account for the hopes of independence in the autonomous region of Catalonia. Through comparative analysis of the articles published in the multilingual media "Euronews" we will consider how these new lexical items and meanings are translated into Spanish, French, English and German. Translating news in multilingual environments is often referred to as "transediting" since: 1). the target news texts are adjusted by additions and omissions, whereby journalists in multitlingual editorials often cooperate between each other; 2) it is difficult to track the news translation process due to lack of accessibility to it; 3) in global news production the writers may work with various sources in different languages at the same time; and 4) adaptations of news texts often lead to appropriation of information and loss of the source. Nevertheless, the lexical choices will have certain functions of identity construction for Catalans and for readers in other languages. The aim of this presentation is therefore to see how such lexical items and meanings created in Spanish and Catalan languages in the context of Catalan independence aspirations are transferred into the selected target languages and cultures
