Redesigning opera in new cultural contexts
Cai, Jing
. - 2021
Abstract:
This thesis explores how opera as an imported artform has taken root and develops within the new contexts of China and Australia. Based on comparative case studies and interviews with practitioners in both countries, the thesis is organised into three parts to address contrasting models of operatic culture and system. It starts with a historical outline of operatic dissemination in each country (macro-level), then moves to investigate specific opera organisations: the National Centre for the Performing Arts in Beijing along with Pinchgut Opera and Sydney Chamber Opera in Sydney (meso-level). This is followed by a detailed analysis of key operatic issues, including the canonic repertoire, new commissions, modern opera production methods, funding patterns, leadership and management structures, and the influence and role of the audience (micro-level). The study reveals quite different approaches to opera development between these countries. China’s philosophy of operatic importation embraces the commissioning of iconic buildings and the development of government-funded institutions to create a uniform system, stimulating the ensuing industry to speedy growth by progressive institutionalisation. In contrast, Australia seeks to provide alternative experiences and working models, generating an evolving system, which promotes a diversified and somewhat independent operatic culture. The differences between Chinese and Australian models have led to an exploration of the underlying patterns of these operatic cultures, resulting in an ‘opera ecosystem’ notion, which allows reflection upon the initial objective of this thesis: the nature and characteristics that opera exhibits when transported to new cultures.
