From form to meaning : an analysis of the it- and ista- prefixed verbs in Cairene Arabic ; De la forme au sens : Analyse des formes verbales préfixées par it- et ista- en arabe du Caire

Abstract:
This work focuses on the interpretations associated with the verbal forms prefixed by it- and ista- in Cairo Arabic, and on the syntactic and semantic characteristics participating in the construction of these interpretations, by questioning the relationship between the derivation process, that these prefixes are, and the syntactic organization of the actants. We have observed the relationship between these prefixed verbal forms and their derivation basis, and compare the values associated with the various prefixed forms in their organization as a system, visible through the distribution of values on the existing forms for a root. The interpretations received by derived verbal forms also depend on the constructions in which they are used, described according to the Construction Grammar’s principles. This description highlighted similarities in the interpretation of verbal forms that are used in the same constructions, as well as the role of construction in this interpretation. ; Ce travail porte sur les interprétations que reçoivent les formes verbales préfixées par it- et ista- en arabe du Caire, et sur les caractéristiques syntaxiques et sémantiques qui participent à la construction de ces interprétations, en interrogeant le rapport entre procédé de dérivation, que sont ces préfixes, et organisation syntaxique des actants. Nous avons observé le rapport que ces formes verbales préfixées entretiennent avec leur base de dérivation, et comparé les valeurs associées aux différentes formes préfixées dans leur organisation en système, visible à travers la distribution des valeurs sur les formes existantes pour une racine. Les interprétations reçues par les formes verbales dérivées dépendent également des constructions dans lesquelles elles sont utilisées, décrites selon les principes de la Construction Grammar. Cette description a permis de mettre en avant des similitudes d’interprétation des formes verbales qui sont utilisées dans les mêmes constructions, ainsi que le rôle de la construction dans cette interprétation.
