Experiment 2 ...
Kumcu, Alper
. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract:
Previous evidence shows that words with implicit spatial meaning or metaphorical spatial associations (e.g., bird – up and hell – down) are perceptually simulated and can guide attention to associated locations (e.g., bird – upward location and hell – downward location). In turn, simulated representations interfere with visual perception at an associated location (spatial interference). Although the spatial interference effect has been established (Estes & Barsalou, 2018), there are contrasting accounts explaining the underlying mechanism. An experiment (Experiment 1) was conducted previously to disambiguate between modal and amodal accounts of spatial interference effects. Participants (n = 48) encoded words presented in congruent (e.g., bird in an upward location) and incongruent locations (e.g., bird in a downward location). At retrieval, an auditorily presented word probed participants’ recognition memory as they were visually cued to either the original location of the probe word or a diagonal ...
