The effect of memory load on regularisation of linguistic variation ...
Keogh, Aislinn
. - : Open Science Framework, 2022
Abstract:
This study aims to test the effect of working memory limitations on the acquisition and evolution of linguistic variation. Previous work (e.g. Hudson Kam and Newport 2009, Smith and Wonnacott 2010, Ferdinand et al. 2019) has demonstrated that humans have cognitive biases which work against unpredictable variation -- where there are no grammatical, lexical, pragmatic or sociolinguistic factors to condition the choice of one variant over another. Regularisation of this kind of variation appears to be primarily a production process, rather than reflecting a failure to accurately encode inconsistent data. For example, Ferdinand et al. (2019) found that, while adult participants encoded as much or even more variability as was present in their input data, they still showed regularisation behaviour during a production task. Similarly, Hudson Kam and Newport (2009) found no evidence that children had failed to learn the inconsistencies of their input when their grammaticality judgements were probed, although they ...
