Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study is to determine just what is meant by the term 'comedia de figurón'; to show how it came into Spanish drama, and its use and purpose as employed by dramatists of the seventeenth century, particularly by Francisco de Rojas Zorrilla and Agustín Moreto y Cabaña, the two authors who cultivated it most extensively. Up to the present time there has been no comprehensive investigation of the comedia de figurón. Almost without exception, the writers of histories of Spanish literature, if they mention the subject at all, merely refer to the type as being cultivated during the Siglo de Oro in Spain, and mention a few plays as belonging to the genre. They usually refer to Rojas or Moreto as the creator of the type, but that is as far as they go, making little attempt to define the term. Exceptions to the general rule are Valbuena Prat and Baron von Schack, who devote considerably more space to a discussion of it. As a rule, these plays are classified as comedias de carácter or de enredo, apparently because the writer has not gone deeply enough into the matter, or space would not permit a fuller treatment of the subject ; Spanish and Portuguese
