Diante da literatura que sugere uma dificuldade por parte dos tradutores ao lidar com metáforas e fenômenos relacionados, apresentamos uma análise de duas traduções para o português do conto inglês “A Scandal in Bohemia”, de Arthur Conan Doyle. Como objetivo, buscamos investigar como os tradutores agem diante de metáforas, metonímias e expressões idiomáticas e verificar a possível presença de mapeamentos metafóricos e metonímicos nas escolhas feitas pelos tradutores. A literatura no âmbito da Linguística Cognitiva descreve três tipos de variações interculturais que potencialmente dificultam a tradução: i) a gama existente de metáforas e metonímias conceituais para um único domínio alvo; ii) elaborações linguísticas específicas de metáforas e metonímias conceituais para atualizar um domínio alvo específico; e iii) a ênfase dada na metáfora ou na metonímia para conceitualizar um domínio alvo. Já nos estudos que lidam com tradução, existe certo consenso de que o desafio está nos casos em que as línguas utilizam domínios conceituais diferentes para expressar ideias parecidas. Portanto, após a seleção das expressões, que se deu com base no método para identificação de metáforas linguísticas MIPVU, foram realizadas as análises das traduções do conto. A investigação sugere que as metáforas, primárias na sua grande maioria, foram frequentemente traduzidas por equivalentes literais. Por sua vez, as metonímias no geral foram traduzidas por expressões metonímicas equivalentes, mas ainda ofereceram desafios específicos. Os problemas na tradução em ambos os casos foram majoritariamente causados por diferenças em elaboração entre as línguas. Em relação às expressões idiomáticas, a análise aponta para a hipótese de que quando a expressão é mais claramente figurada (complexa ou idiomática), existe um esforço maior por parte dos tradutores para as traduzirem como expressões figuradas. Quando se trata de uma expressão mais básica, entretanto, a chance de escolha de um equivalente literal foi maior. Assim, o estudo pode contribuir tanto para o estudo dessas figuras de linguagem quanto para os estudos de tradução. ; This study brings closer the disciplines of translation studies and the studies on figurative language according to the Cognitive Linguistics perspective. According to the literature which suggests that translators face difficulties to translate metaphors and metaphor-related phenomena, we present an analysis of two translations of the English short story “A Scandal in Bohemia”, by Arthur Conan Doyle, into Brazilian Portuguese. Our aim was to investigate how translators perform when having to deal with metaphors, metonymies and idioms and to examine the presence of metaphoric and metonymic mappings on their translated versions. The literature on Cognitive Linguistics accounts for three types of intercultural variation which potentially interfere in the process of translating: i) differences in the range of conceptual metaphors and metonymies to conceptualize one given target; ii) differences in the possible linguistic elaborations of conceptual metaphors and metonymies for one given target; and iii) differences in the emphasis on metaphor instead of metonymy associated with a given target, or vice-versa. On the studies that deal with translation, it is usually unanimous that the challenge of figurative language translation lies on cases in which the given languages use different domains to express similar ideas. With this in mind, after the selection of the expressions that would feature this study, done based on MIPVU, a method for the identification of linguistic metaphors, the analysis was carried out. Our investigation suggests that metaphors, mostly primary in this case, were frequently translated by their literal equivalents. On turn, metonymies in general were translated by metonymic expressions, but still presented specific challenges. The problems in translation in both cases were mainly caused by differences in elaboration between the languages. Regarding idioms, the analysis also indicates that when an expression is more explicitly figurative (complex or idiomatic), there is a greater effort from the translators to choose equivalent figurative expressions on the target language. When it comes to more basic expressions, however, the chances of literal choices by the translators were greater. Thus, this monograph may contribute to the studies on such figures of speech as well as to translation studies. Keyword: 1859-1930.
