Abstract:
Cognitive flexibility involves the mental ability to switch or shift amongst different conceptual representations in response to a dynamic environment. It is considered to be a component of executive functioning and is critical to behavioural success (Friedman et al., 2006). Prior research suggests that cognitive flexibility can be distinguished from other executive functions such as working memory and response inhibition (e.g., Friedman & Miyake, 2006; Robbins et al., 1998), whereas the latter two are usually found to be highly correlated with each other (Friedman & Miyake, 2006; Blackwell et al., 2014; Mittal et al., 2015). However, it is unknown whether cognitive flexibility itself may be further fractionated into sub-components (such as rule learning during exploration, as distinct from executive switching), and the extent to which different cognitive flexibility tasks tap into these sub-components.
