Abstract:
; Proverbs, as a kind of popular expression of everyday life, not only show an aesthetic value but also the experiences of societies throughout history. On account of the growing depth of connections and relationships between China and Portugal, the linguistic and cultural perspective gives us a different way of looking at the similarities and differences between the two countries. The present dissertation focuses on the proverbs of food in Portuguese and Chinese languages. The support of the theory of cognitive linguistics helps to explain the connection between proverbs and cultural experiences. In addition, it is also intended to address how to use proverbs in teaching, especially with Chinese students. Through the collected proverbs, hidden meanings are discovered and distinct cultures are compared. This will allow us to be more tolerant of cultural discrepancies and find a balance within a multicultural coexistence.
