Taboo: Analysis of referring expressions in an interactive communication game ...
Trott, Sean. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: This project was designed to capture spontaneous, naturalistic speech in a controlled setting. In particular, we were interested in whether people use measurably different linguistic structures to refer to entities/events as a function of whether they are conversing with a friend or a stranger, how these descriptions change over time, and whether they are affected by the semantic or pragmatic category of a given referent. Similar to past work (Pollmann & Krahmer, 2018; Zdrazilova et al, 2018; Williams et al, 2010; de Boer et al, 2013), we adapted the game Taboo for an in-lab study. In the game, players must communicate a concept (e.g., "watch") to a partner without using specific "taboo" words (e.g., "time") or iconic gestures. Two pairs of participants competed against each other; each participant was paired both with a friend (who they brought to the lab) and a stranger (from the opposite pair). For each trial, we recorded both the trial outcome (Win vs. Lose vs. Out of time) and audio from the speaker ...
