Abstract:
International audience ; This empirical lexical semantic study aims to provide evidence of diachronic phonesthemic reanalysis in the lexicon. After proposing a methodology for analysing the sense of fl-monomorphemes in the OED,a cognitive profile is proposed based on the dates of emergence of key features and the combination patterns of these features. This cognitive profile is then put to the test using a diachronic corpus to carry out a distributional semantic analysis on a number of case studies, which allow for the consideration of the role of context in assigning meaning. The findings show that the cognitive profile proposed is particularly detectable in novel uses. In addition, they confirm that cognitive profile of the phonestheme is compatible with the acoustic and phonetic features of the fl-phonestheme, which potentially explains the transmodal variation of the phonestheme.
