Quality in Interpreting: interpreters' VS listeners' perception
Abstract:
This paper compares users' needs with interpreters' expectations in order to help interpreters work on tailoring the service they provide. This can help ensure interpreting as a profession remains at the forefront of clients' needs in an ever-changing world. This paper examines the constant preoccupation with quality which has developed along with the profession's development, and asks how interpreters and listeners views on quality may .differ. It looks at questions regarding what characterises a good interpretation have frequently arisen, such as subject knowledge, terminological accuracy, fluency, native accent, and, last but not least, professionalism. The paper also looks at structural issues within interpreting studies, for instance the need to move beyond bemoaning the lack of one individual definition of quality. Moreover, the paper takes a look at survey design and how by integrating research on methodological framework and current context-based theories researchers would be able to ask more precise questions which would elicit data on how users' needs change.
