Abstract:
Die vorliegende Diplomarbeit die Untersuchung von mentalen Bildern der Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika in einer Anthologie, die in den frühen 1950er Jahren in Deutschland und Österreich publiziert wurde, als Ziel. Die Anthologie Eine Neue Welt für Unsere Jugend ist eine farbenfrohe und vielseitige Zusammenstellung von Artikeln und Geschichten, die der jungen Nachkriegsgeneration die Vereinigten Staaten von Amerika näherbringen sollte, und wird die Basis für meine Analyse sein. Die Analyse selbst basiert auf der folgenden Forschungsfrage: Wie und auf welche Art könnte die Anthologie Eine Neue Welt für Unsere Jugend benutzt worden sein um die Enkulturalisation von Kindern und Jugendlichen via mentalen Bildern zum Zweck der Umerziehung und Resozialisierung nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg zu fördern und zu unterstützen. Um die Forschungsfrage zu beantworten habe ich meine Diplomarbeit in zwei Hauptteile geteilt: Einerseits der theoretische Rahmen und andererseits die tatsächliche Analyse der Anthologie. Der theoretische Teil selbst ist wiederum in zwei Abschnitte untereilt: Zunächst wird der historische Hintergrund des Buches vorgestellt. Dieser Abschnitt soll dem Leser Einblicke in die U.S. Kulturmission, sowie die Demokratisierungs- und Umorientierungspläne der USA für Deutschland und Österreich während und nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg geben. Die Diskussion der historischen und politischen Umstände wird dabei besonders auf die U.S. Information Service Centers und deren Literaturprogramme fokussiert sein. Der zweite Abschnitt setzt mit einer Besprechung von Imagologie, einem Forschungsgebiet aus den Vergleichenden Literaturwissenschaften, fort, sowie mit einer Besprechung der imagologischen Kinder- und Jugendliteraturforschung, welche die Rahmenbedingungen und methodischen ‚Werkzeuge‘ für meine Analyse bereitstellen wird. Für die Analyse der Anthologie im zweiten Teil meiner Diplomarbeit habe ich anhand von empfohlenen methodischen Richtlinien aus der Imagologie vier grobe mentale Bilder identifiziert. Die Diskussion dieser Bilder soll die Fortsetzung, Variation und/oder Widerlegung vorherrschender mentaler Bilder von ‚Americanness‘ untersuchen, sowie deren mögliche Bedeutung für die Kulturmission der Vereinigten Staaten und deren Umerziehungs- und Umorientierungspläne nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. ; This diploma-thesis aims to investigate mental images of the United States of America in an anthology published in the early 1950s in Germany and Austria. The anthology Eine Neue Welt für Unsere Jugend is a colorful and eclectic compilation of articles and stories with the intention to represent and introduce the United States of America to the young post-World War II generation. It is also the basis of my analysis. The analysis itself is based on the following research question: How and in which ways could the anthology Eine Neue Welt für Unsere Jugend have been used as a tool to promote and nurture the enculturation of children and young adults via mental images as a means for their reeducation and resocialization post World War II. For the purpose of answering the research question I have structured my thesis into two main parts: first, the theoretical framework, and, second, the actual analysis of the anthology. The theoretical part is itself divided into two sections: The first section aims to introduce the reader to the historical context of the book. It gives insight into the U.S. cultural mission and U.S. democratization and reorientation for Germany and Austria during and after World War II. The discussion of the historic and political circumstances is focused especially on the U.S. Information Service Centers and their literature programs. The second section then continues to outline imagology, a field of research coming from comparative literature studies, and the cross-field of imagological children’s (and young adult) literature research, which provides the methodological ‘tools’ and framework for my analysis. For the analysis of the anthology in the second part of my thesis I have identified four broad mental images according to suggested methodological guidelines of imagology. The discussion of these images aims to investigate the continuation, variation, and/or contradiction of prevalent mental images of ‘Americanness’ and their possible significance for the cultural mission of the United States and their reeducation and reorientation plans in the post-World War II-era.
