FRED interactive database ; Freiburg Corpus of English Dialects (FRED) - interactive database
Abstract: This interactive database provides access to full-length transcripts and audio material sampled in the Freiburg Corpus of English Dialects (FRED) and its subset the Freiburg Corpus of English Dialects Sampler (FRED-S). Note that for reasons of copyright restrictions only part of the corpus can be made available here. We have adopted a "notice and take down policy" so that the exact number of files available may be subject to change. FRED is a monolingual spoken-language corpus of traditional dialects in the British Isles. It samples approximately 2.5 million words and is estimated to be based on about 300 hours of recorded speech. The corpus contains full-length transcripts of 372 oral history interviews (partly available as digitised audio files) with male and female speakers from 163 different locations in 43 different counties across 9 major dialect areas. The database offers text and audio previews as well as a custom download option. Furthermore, the files can be sorted by different social parameters of the speakers, such as sex, age and regional background. These filters can provide a first overview of the social texture of the data. For example, for researchers interested in a particular regional dialect (e.g. English in the North of England), it is possible to only select the interviews from this dialect area and to determine the age distribution of the speakers. Moreover, the database comes with a full text search of the transcripts and returns all files containing the search term. Note that it does not return the occurrence frequency of the search term. While the database is not a concordance analysis tool it may still offer a starting point for linguistic analyses.
