Our survey found that the use of the -tte sentence-final quotation form was the most common type of quotation form in both types of conversations. Additionally, the sentence-final quotation form in -datte? (with a question mark) was common in conversations in novels, but very few instances of -datte pronounced in a rising intonation were found in real-life conversations. A closer examination of this difference in the tendencies of quotation use by register showed that the characteristics of the conversations affected the tendency to use the -tte sentence-final quotation form. This is because real-life conversations consist of interactions between independent speakers, while conversations in novels reflect the author's intention and need to consider not only the characters but also the readers. We argue that this difference influenced the use of the -tte sentence-final quotation form in each register.
