Comunidade surda idosa em Portugal: necessidades, preocupações e expectativas face ao futuro

Abstract:
Este trabalho surgiu essencialmente por motivos pessoais e profissionais, porque sou filha de pais surdos, intérprete de língua gestual portuguesa, e pelo facto de acompanhar as lutas da comunidade surda pela inclusão e acessibilidade desde sempre. A questão de não existir uma resposta social para idosos que inclua devidamente idosos surdos é uma questão debatida há anos e que até hoje não chegou a nenhum consenso. Daí a importância da questão de partida deste trabalho, a qual passa por conhecer quais as necessidades, preocupações e expectativas face ao futuro da comunidade surda idosa em Portugal, procurando-se, com este estudo, contribuir para uma necessária reflexão a respeito desta problemática, incluindo algumas possíveis soluções. Para esta investigação e, especificamente no plano teórico, foi dada particular importância aos conceitos de comunicação, língua gestual portuguesa, envelhecimento e institucionalização. Relativamente à metodologia, a opção recaiu na utilização de uma estratégia metodológica de natureza qualitativa, centrada na utilização da técnica da entrevista, enquanto instrumento de recolha de dados, e um grupo focal. Inclui a perspetiva de alguns surdos idosos mas também dos seus filhos, que sentem estas preocupações, bem como a de várias entidades com preocupações sobre o assunto e que operam no terreno em torno da comunidade surda. Os resultados apurados com esta pesquisa sugerem a necessidade de insistir na discussão desta temática, dado que, como demonstrado, ainda se verifica no nosso país uma desadequação e insuficiência de serviços adequados para esta população com características tão específicas, pelo que o acompanhamento por parte dos filhos e outros cuidadores é ainda essencial. ; This work arose essentially for personal and professional reasons, because I am the daughter of deaf parents, an interpreter of Portuguese sign language, and because I have always followed the struggles of the deaf community for inclusion and accessibility. The question of not having a social response for the elderly that duly includes deaf elderly people is an issue that has been debated for years and has not yet reached any consensus. Hence the importance of the starting point of this work, which involves knowing the needs, concerns and expectations regarding the future of the elderly deaf community in Portugal, seeking, with this study, to contribute to a necesary reflection on this issue, including some possible solutions. For this research and specifically on the theoretical level, particular importance was given to the concepts of communication, Portuguese sign language, aging and institutionalization. Regarding the methodology, the option was to use a methodological strategy of a qualitative nature, centered on the use of interview technique as a data collection tool, and in a focus group. It includes the perspective of some elderly deaf people and also of their children, who feel these concerns, as well as that of various entities with concerns about the subject and that operate in the field around the deaf community. The results obtained with this research suggest the need to insist on the discussion of this theme, given that, as demonstrated, there is still an inadequacy and insufficiency of adequate services for this population with such specific characteristics, so that the monitoring by their children and other caregivers is still essential.
