DIe Rolle des IPA im Französischunterricht an österreichischen AHS
Abstract:
; The mastery of a foreign language’s pronunciation becomes increasingly important, due to factors such as the progressive globalisation and worldwide networking. Nevertheless, it represents a challenging undertaking which includes numerous cognitive processes too. Diverse systems, such as the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), have been designed to support these processes and to facilitate pronunciation-training. Despite these global changes and the existence of aiding devices, pronunciation-teaching seems to be of inferior interest to Austrian French teachers at lower and upper secondary. This study focuses on the role attributed to explicit pronunciation-teaching by Austrian teachers of French as a second language at lower and upper secondary, with specific interest in the implementation of the IPA. Based on six qualitative interviews, my research aims to gain an insight in the teachers’ experiences concerning the teaching of pronunciation and their opinion on integrating the IPA. The analysis reveals that most teachers do not include explicit pronunciation training, as they opt for corrective feedback during students’ oral productions. With regard to the usage of the IPA, most teachers claim that they would not include it due to the lack of time, interest and expertise. These results implicate that the training of pronunciation in this specific context still is of inferior importance. Furthermore, they should serve as a basis for further research concerning the design of purposeful methods to teach pronunciation, with special regard to the integration of the IPA as an aiding device.
