Abstract: In 1982, state-trained cultural promoters from the Yucatan Peninsula in Southern Mexico, comprising the three states of Yucatan, Quintana Roo and Campeche, began to write and publish bilingual texts in the Maya and Spanish languages. This followed almost thirty years of relative silence during which few texts in Maya circulated. Scholars in the fields of Latin American cultural and literary studies, linguistics and anthropology have sought to account for the significance of indigenous cultural promoters, anthropologists, and poets writing in their native languages and Spanish throughout Latin America since the 1980s. In their answers to the question, what is Maya literature, academics emphasise that it is a cultural and linguistic revindication movement and that Maya have always been storytellers, creators and scribes.
